ESD Certification Examination Sessions
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) education is the priority activity of the ESD Association. The Association co-sponsors re-gional
tutorials with local chapters, conducts a national tutorial
and education seminar in conjunction with the annual EOS/ESD
Symposium, and publishes and distributes numerous educational
materials on ESD. iNARTE and the ESD Association work
together to administer exams to ESD Certification candidates in
conjunction with these regional educational programs.
ESD Association Tutorials and Exam Session, June 13, Tyngsboro, MA
The passing rate for the June 13, 2001 ESD Examination
session was 81%. Sixteen examinees; four engineers and twelve
technicians, sat for the exam. All of the engineers and nine of the
twelve technicians passed their exams.
NARTE Headquarters staff present at the exam session
helped answer administrative questions and strengthen ties
between NARTE and the New England ESD Association chapter.
ESD Association Annual Meeting Exam Session Held on 14 September in Portland, OR
The ESD Association had scheduled seventeen persons to sit
for the examination in Portland. The technical sessions began on
September 11, the same day the World Trade Center and the
Pentagon were attacked by terrorists.
Our hearts went out to the people who suffered in that
terrible event, and our sympathies were with the symposium
attendees who left early to be with family during those trying
times. Of those originally scheduled, only eight made it to the
examination.

NARTE Student Chapter Activities at NC A&T State University
Career Conferences of America, Inc.
The NARTE Student Chapter at NC A&T
assisted Career Conferences of America,
Inc. (CCA) in providing a career fair for
various disciplines across the campus. The
career fair took place in Washington, D.C.
on February 2, 2001. Of the 125 students
who signed up, only 60 students were able
to attend the conference. The NARTE chapter at NC A&T organized details of
the trip, from attaining authorization from the university, to
bus arrangements and hotel accommodations at the Wyndham City Center Hotel. The
NC A&T student chapter also made arrangements for classes to excuse
all attendees. The career conference was also used as a small fundraiser,
as well as for promotion of the NARTE organization and student chapter at NC A&T.
Homecoming Float
The NARTE chapter at NC A&T spearheaded the drive to organize the
various student organizations within the School of Technology to build the first
homecoming school float in over a decade. The float was entered in the best float
category in the homecoming parade and placed fourth. Ms. iNARTE (Michelle
Dunston) participated in the Ms. A&T coronation during homecoming week.
Chapter Operations
Monthly chapter meetings reviewed other fundraiser opportunities such as selling
candy, coliseum work, selling electronic lab kits, and publishing a study guide for the
national certification test. Efforts included selection of members to the NARTE chapter
at NC A&T from NARTE student members as well as NC A&T industry cluster. Work in
the area of motivating members to participate in school functions as well as NARTE
programs were in place in the Fall 2001 semester by means of a merit program. Details
are being refined by Ms. Crystal Harkless, VP NARTE chapter NC A&T. A
new position was created for Ms. Ladson, whose title changed from Secretary to Public
Relations Officer due to her extensive involvement in University activities. By means
of the election process, Ms. Tolanda Kennedy assumed all responsibilities of Secretary.
Elections were held for the NC A&T NARTE Student Chapter officers in September, 2001.

NARTE Executive Director Russell Carstensen has accepted an invitation from
our NARTE Japan Review Committee to speak at the EMC Kansai ‘01 Seminar. Mr.
Carstensen will present his paper, "Three Trends in EMC" at the closing workshop on
the first day of the seminar. The EMC Kansai ’01 seminar is a two-day event,

Accredited EMC Laboratory Certification Requirements
The NARTE Board of Directors has eliminated the examination requirement
for NARTE certified EMC practitioners who wish to add an endorsement for
employment at an accredited EMC test laboratory. Current NARTE members
who wish to add the ATL endorsement to their EMC Engineer or Technician certification
are now exempt from the ATL examination requirement. Note: iNARTE
EMC Certified personnel who are applying for ATL certification in a cross-discipline
(i.e., Engineer to Technician or vice versa) will still be required to pass the
appropriate NARTE ATL Personnel examination.
Please don’t hesitate to contact iNARTE headquarters with any questions
regarding these policy changes, or EMC ATL certification.
Accredited EMC Laboratory Examination
The examination for Accredited EMC Laboratory engineers or Accredited EMC
Laboratory technicians is a 4 hour written exam session
consisting of 40 questions. All examinations are given
with open book.
EMC Laboratory fundamentals cover the following subjects:
September 2001 Heptode Award Recipients
There are people who believe in NARTE enough to periodically lend a
hand. The Headquarters has developed the "Heptode Award" (named after a seven electrode vacuum tube) to properly
thank those who represent NARTE in an outstanding manner, or help our operations in some way.
The symbol for the award is a "hep toad". Just as added elements make complex circuits function better, hep toads
that "hop to" and help us out, make our operations more efficient.
Along with the paper award suitable for framing, an attractive pin embellished
with a green toad on a blue and gold NARTE logo further marks the occasion.
Congratulations to the September 2001
Heptode Award Recipients:
